FYI...

PMS, PMT, Premenstral Bad Times!!!!
Whatever you like to call it, some of us ladies have a terrible time just before or during our periods. It is something which is hard to combat and it happens every month, whether we like it or not! In fact, I would comment that one of the best parts of being pregnant was not having my period for over a year!!!

The symptoms which we sometimes see can be both physical and pyschological. I have read through a few articles and made a short list of some of these....

Psychological: Anxiety, Irritability, Feeling "out of control", Tearfulness, Depression, Forgetfulness, Exhaustion, Feelings of aggression or anger, Panic attacks, Changes in sleep patterns, sex drive and appetite.

Physical: Headaches/migraine, Feeling/being bloated, Weight gain, Tender breasts, Abdominal pain, Swelling of the hands and feet, Backache and painful joints, Nausea, Epilepsy, asthma, migraine and cold sores may worsen.

You may suffer from some, all or (if you are lucky) none of these during your time of the month. If you do have some of these symptoms, it is important to try and assess how best to manage them. If it is very serious (either physically or pschologically) you may need to seek advice from a health professional. You shouldn't have to suffer alone. If they are minor (like me), then you need to find simple solutions to mitigate the effects of PMS. If you get anxious and "panicy" - perhaps spend time doing a relaxing hobby, to take your mind away from stress. Some women find that regular exercise helps to lift the symptoms and also a taking up a "PMS" diet of foods such as regular snacks of fruit, vegetables, cereals and calcium-rich foods is helpful, as is cutting out coffee, chocolate, alcohol, salt and fats has been said to help. These are not proven total "fix-its" for PMS, but it certainly wouldn't hurt!!!

Much of what I have read is all about taking control of your condition and being pro-active. This can probably be applied to many aspects of our lives, but at that time of the month it can be hard to implement without a bit of support. Family can be great here if you take the time to communicate with them.

I hope this "blurb" is useful for some of you out there - for a full article on the subject, click here: http://www.babycenter.com.au/preconception/activelytrying/pms/

Take care out there and Happy Days to you all.
